If you still need to learn whether the shoe sells, do not open a mould first. If you already have a last and a market, do not buy a warehouse of someone else's silhouette.
Most first-time importers treat “custom” as a status word. It is a risk word. Custom means you pay to freeze a last, a mould and a material set before the market has told you anything.
Ready stock is the other honest option: existing inventory, confirmed per style on inquiry, no new tooling. You list it, you see sell-through, you reorder or you stop. That is not a lesser business. It is how you avoid funding a mould for a shoe nobody reorders.
| Your situation | Better first route | Why |
|---|---|---|
| New brand, untested market | Ready stock | Learn colour and size run without tooling |
| Importer filling a season gap | Ready stock | Inventory exists; confirmed per style on inquiry |
| Retailer private label with a known last | Custom OEM | The silhouette has to be yours |
| Brand with a direction but no last | ODM / developed last | Design help is the product, not a warehouse |
| Proven stock style that keeps reordering | Move that winner to custom | Keep the risk on the styles that already sell |
Ready stock is inventory that already exists. Quantity, size run and price are confirmed per style when you ask. We do not publish a ship-in-X-days promise on this page, because availability moves. If you need a carton count this week, email the style.
Ready stock is not your own last. It is not a way to smuggle a custom design into a small quantity. If you need your own silhouette, you are on the custom path — see sampling and production timeline.
Custom is OEM or ODM: your last or a developed last, your colour, your construction, then bulk after the sample freeze. MOQ starts at 600 pairs per color (mixed sizes) for existing styles (1,200 pairs per color for custom styles) and is confirmed per style at quotation, not copied from a marketplace listing. Read OEM vs ODM vs private label if the vocabulary is still fuzzy.
Custom is worth it when you already know the silhouette must be yours: a brand with a fit story, a retailer private label, a colourway the stock line cannot give you. It is not worth it as a first experiment in a new market.
| Mix | How it usually runs |
|---|---|
| Stock now, custom later | Use sell-through data to freeze one last, not ten |
| Custom for hero, stock for depth | Hero colourway owned; basic colourways from inventory |
| Trial production | Your style, limited run, feasibility confirmed before a larger programme |
Both routes run through the same manufacturing partner: Jiangxi BaiYing Group, 473 mu (about 78 acres), 480,000 m2, 16 lines, 68 stitching lines, 20 million pairs and 10 million garments a year. Steed Sports sells the export programme. The plant is not “our own factory” in the ownership sense, and we do not write it that way.
If you want the low-commitment version of custom, that is a trial production evaluated case by case — see what to expect on MOQ. If you want to see the floor first, open the factory tour or send a live-video request with the brief.

Ready-stock quantity and price are confirmed per style on inquiry. Custom sampling and bulk dates are confirmed per style after we see the brief.
