Material and colour direction for athletic footwear development

Shoe materials, in buyer language.

Mesh, knit, leather, EVA and rubber are not marketing words. They are the decisions that later show up in sampling time, pair cost and how the shoe fails.

Buyers get lost in material names because factories sell names. The useful question is simpler: what does each layer do, and which of those layers are you actually paying to change?

Steed Sports is the international partner of Jiangxi BaiYing Group. We do not publish a materials catalogue of client work. We do explain the stack so your brief is a brief, not a mood.

The stack

LayerWhat buyers usually meanWhat to decide
UpperMesh, knit, leather, synthetic, overlaysFamily + colour + whether it is cut-and-sew or knitted
Lining / sockComfort against the footBreathability vs abrasion vs branding of the sockliner
MidsoleCushion. Often called EVA even when it is not only EVARide intent, not a slogan compound name
OutsoleGrip and wear. Usually rubberPattern, hardness, and which areas need rubber at all
TrimsEyelets, laces, logos, weldsWhat is moulded, stitched, printed or stuck

What actually changes the commercial conversation

  • A mill already in the qualified network versus a special compound with a long mill lead. The campus works with 100+ qualified material suppliers. Unusual is not impossible. It is slower and it belongs in the sample plan.
  • Knit versus cut-and-sew mesh. Knit changes pattern, waste and how colour is built. Mesh is usually a cut upper with overlays. They do not share a quotation line.
  • Leather and synthetic leather. Common on casual and court-adjacent styles. Finish, thickness and lining decide both hand-feel and stitching behaviour.
  • Bottoming. A rubber outsole and an EVA midsole are the default language of athletic footwear. A plated or highly tuned midsole is a different development, confirmed per style.

Upper knitting, sole, insole and lace lines exist on the partner campus as supporting capacity. They are not added on top of the locked finished output of 20 million pairs and 10 million garments a year. If a salesperson adds those numbers together, they are selling you a spreadsheet, not a factory.

Make it look premiumWhich layer: upper hand-feel, midsole ride, or outsole wear?
Knit like the sampleDo you have the last? Knit behaviour follows the last.
Lighter than last seasonTarget use, not a gram number copied from a listing.
Same as the referenceWhich parts must match, and which can be commercial equivalents?

How to brief it so sampling is honest

Send a reference pair, or name the upper family and the job of the shoe. Colour intent belongs here: Pantone or a physical swatch. Last source belongs here too, because a material that looks right on one last can fail on another. Sampling time is confirmed per style after we see that set — see what happens during sampling.

FAQ

Materials — questions buyers ask.

Show all 4 questions

Can you copy the material of a reference pair?

+
We can work from a reference pair. The mill, the compound and the exact knit or mesh may not be identical. We say what can be matched and what will be a commercial equivalent.

Do you knit uppers in-campus?

+
The manufacturing partner campus includes computer knitting for uppers, plus supporting sole, insole and lace capacity. Finished-pair output is counted separately and is not added to those supporting lines.

What should I specify in the first brief?

+
Upper family (mesh, knit, leather, synthetic), midsole intent, outsole rubber, and the job of the shoe. Pantone or a swatch beats the word premium.

Will a lighter shoe always cost more?

+
Not always. Weight comes from last, midsole compound, upper density and process. We quote after the construction is visible, not from a target gram weight in an email.

Send the material set. Or send a reference pair.

A human replies within 12 working hours. If you do not have a tech pack yet, a reference shoe and a target market are enough to start the material conversation.

Name and work email are enough. Add the market, a reference shoe and a target quantity if you have them.
